Hockey – A Famous Sport

Hockey is one of the oldest sport and there are proofs of its existence that the games resembling this famous sport were even played in 200 BC. The game evolved differently in different ways in many European and Asian countries. In some places it was played on horseback (polo), in other places, it was played on ice that is ice – hockey. But the rules of the modern field hockey were first codified in England. And from then, this game has earned immense popularity among the people of different countries and has become one of the most loved and followed games in the world’s history.

The latest rules of this famous sport are that the two teams compete against each other and the two teams have 11 players each which play for two halves of 35 minutes each. This time is 30 minutes for women. Apart from this time they have 5-10 minutes rest during their half time. By using the front face of the sticks, they try to get the ball into opposite team’s goal which is worth 1 point each. The goalkeeper can use his hands and legs but cannot hold the ball to stop the goal. The team with more number of goal points wins the match.

Some famous and important tournaments of Hockey are Olympic Games, World Championship, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Federation Cup. All these cups are very popular among the followers of hockey.

The love of people for this famous sport can be imagined by seeing the fact that hockey is also the national sport of many countries including Canada, India and Pakistan.
